She has to - she can’t deal with her owner anymore! I broke down and called the vet yesterday, and he gave me several reasons that I shouldn’t worry about the calf.
• The first baby can come at anytime. ![]()
• The bull, (whom we only know as Willy) may throw late calves.
• The owner can’t read a calendar. :O
• Jetta is a trickster. ![]()
• Even though her heat cycle had been on a 21 day schedule for months preceding the arrival of that handsome devil Willy, she decided to come back in heat at 17 days, after her first service, since she knew he was shipping out the next morning. Hmmmmm…
The vet thinks it is #5, or #3, so I have egg on my face either way. Of course, he is diagnosing this conundrum over the phone, so I’ll just have to take his and Jetta’s word for it. She’s not talking! The beef cows are mad at me, since I don’t fret and worry over them. My family is totally glazed over, since this happens every year. So we’re still waiting. Sorry about the big buildup… .
Other news: IT’S WET!
Too wet for broilers outside yet, and too wet for my rubber boots with a hole!

Too wet for dogs, unless they can hunt.

It’s never too wet for mole hunting.

“Mom, is this where molasses comes from?”

Too wet for baby robins. Unfortunately, this nest is on the ground, the dogs found it, and have since forgotten. But I can’t promise the cats won’t find it.
Too wet for the bees to enjoy these sweet smelling English Holly blooms.
3 week old broilers having dinner, on their way to becoming dinner.

I think they can read my mind… .

I’m outta here, I think she wants to eat US!

Only raising broilers for ourselves has been enlightening. The weather is wet and cold - 3″ of rain since Tuesday and 44* today. I want to put weight on these guys, so having the choice to leave them in, until the weather breaks is far better than being on a strict rotation. When we raised these meat birds to sell, we always had another batch pushing the previous ones out of the brooder, out to the pens, and out of the pens. This is also the kind of miserable weather that causes a high mortality rate. I’ve been bringing them grass and clover to make up for what they are missing by not being outside.
Peppers - I should be planting.
These are the peppers that got nipped in mid-April. I had hoped they would come out of it, since it seemed too late to start over. They look pretty good, with good healthy root systems. I’ve been dithering about whether to plant these yet or not. If I wait a little while longer I can still cover them at night, if I plant them they are on their own. I’ve already put in the tomatoes, and they seem fine.

The waiting is torture!
Jetta is just too funny. It really amazes me when I read other blogs at the weather differences around the country. We are so dry compared to your wet weather. Had a 10 minute rain the other day, the first in weeks. We surely needed it. Haven’t put any tender plants in my gardens although I have them ready in the shed as nights are still cool and patchy area of frosts are still predicted. I’m so ready for warmer weather.
Have a great memorial day weekend. Hope the sun arrives for you (and Jetta’s calf
Debi
I loved both of these two posts. What fantastic photos of the fantastic place where you live! Simply beautiful. Breath taking even.
And I sure can feel your pain on the waiting for the calf front. We just went through almost two weeks of that with one of Alan’s retired show cows. She was bred AI to Silky Cousteau and we wanted so much to see that first calf by him. She is a big, lovely cow, but on the coarse side and he throws them angular and dairy.
What he threw us was a bull calf…and not even a particularly large or lovely one. Oh, well,
I hope Jetta gets on with things so you can have some peace.
Deb, at the very least Jetta seems fine… except I’m not known for my patience. She is our only heifer to calve this season, so that is part of it.
As for the weather, this is pretty typical, we usually have frequent rains until July 4th. Just enough dry weather to get garden planted June 1st and then plenty of rain. It is a little colder this year though. We have such cool nights, even in the summer that without the greenhouse I wouldn’t be sure of tomatoes, peppers or melons.
Thanks for the Memorial Day wishes, and I hope you and your family have an enjoyable weekend without too much work!
Threecollie, those views are breathtaking! No matter what the weather, it is always a surprise - I can never pick my favorite, but it might be when the clouds fill the gorge and it looks like you can just walk right over to Washington state.
That’s too bad about Alan’s cow, (great pics of Alan BTW) it always seems like we get bulls out of the cows we want heifers out of. We have one purebred Hereford that I would love to have duplicates of, but her heifers are always small, and her bulls are huge. This doesn’t change with the bull either. They are always calm, and smart too! If I wanted to try to breed mini Herefords I could use her heifers.
Jetta is from AI, and the Guernsey gene pool is so small, I have no idea what is in her genetics at all, as far as productivity, longevity, etc. Most of the bulls aren’t even proven anymore. Sigh.
Have a great weekend and this means May is almost OVER!
Not too wet to enjoy your beautiful photos. Still laughing over Trace and his molasses. Kiera and Graidy just brought me one earlier this morning too. And I can totally relate to your worrying over Jetta. I’m right there with you — no matter that your vet thinks it’s 3 or 5. I understand that it’s just the very intense desire to want everything to be okay NOW.
…..a watched cow:) I too loved your “where I live” post! Now you’re the one that is going to be busy, busy, busy and I’ll be relaxed and just reading about it!
AMWD, we love our camera, there is never a shortage of photo ops - although the dogs get tired of being in all the pictures. he he Trace is guarding his mole today, (as if he needs to) and he seems puzzled that we aren’t as interested as he is. I couldn’t resist the molasses caption. The old wives tail about dogs not eating slick-tailed vermin is holding true. They will kill rats and mice, but they don’t ever eat them. But, a packrat or squirrel - lookout! The cats are a different story though… . You nailed it with Jetta, I just want it to happen and be able to move on to the next stage.
Linda, I know, I know. On the scenery front, we went to pickup our weaner pigs today, at a different farm than usual. So we saw some different scenes , I hope to post about. We had quite a day - stay tuned. I drove so I didn’t have to listen to “anybody” complaining about cyclists in the road, and I didn’t have to open any gates!!!
