Cooling down
2009 July 31
You know it has been hot when you’re relieved that it is only going reach 90°F!!
Well Hangdog just about has the roof done…and me and Ruthless are hanging out on the veranda. Just kidding. This is one of the local McMansions, you turn your back and look what happens to the neighborhood
I am posting about home canned salsa today over at Simple-Green-Frugal. My tomatoes are a long way off from canning, but I know some people are bringing in the harvest so I thought a post from my archives would fit the bill.

Can you imagine what it takes to pay the heating bill? I am glad to say that does not appeal to me. I can live with so much less. Then again, I suppose if one had a house like that then there would be maids and money for the utilities.
I am glad to hear it is cooling down.
findingpam, no I can’t, the winters up there on that hill are treacherous, constant wind and ice, but maybe they have enough money to travel to a warmer climate for the winter. Too big for me.
Goodness! I thought it was yours! What an amazing house. When I see things like that I always think…what are the taxes on that thing.

Linda, I can’t even imagine what it takes to maintain that place, I have never seen any sign of life outside – but obviously someone lives there. I agree I would hate that tax bill.
And I complain about the 80’s being hot. I am glad at times that I live in the northeast!!
Lisa, me too, 80 is too hot, I hate this hot weather!
Too funny Nita. I plan on doing salsa this year so your post comes in perfect time!
Thanks Kim!
LOL what’s those peoples air conditioning bill this year……….I’m sure they’d have to have air conditioning (the real thing not the shut your windows when it’s hot and open again when it cools, like me) and if 90* is cool then money is no object
LOL – the house behind it is even bigger! I’m not sure of the square footage on this one, but the big one is 14000 sf. The garage is bigger than most houses and it has counter space you wouldn’t believe. I won’t even tell you about the pool!
As hot as it’s been, I think heating is the bigger problem, to get the views around here, you have to be in the wind and in the winter it blows about 70 mph all the time. I think bringing all that cold air down from Canada!! wink wink…
I think I’ll take my no view and no wind house and call it good.
I couldn’t have said it better. My neighbors and I were all out doors this morning in a frenzy of liberated activity!
I don’t think I could even know what to do with that much space, forget about the maintenance/utilities costs…. it seems like being in that house would be so removed from the world and everything around a person – almost like the house has become a world unto itself. While it might be right for the owners, its not right for me…. I’d be so lost.
I just don’t get why people need to have houses that big. It seems to me that they are rarely in them to enjoy because they are out working 18 hours a day, six days a week to pay for the darned things and all the bills they incur to keep them up. I have a 1000sq. ft. house for my three daughters and myself. At times it seemed cramped, but it really is enough!
80 degrees, 90 degrees? Much too hot for my bones. I love where I am in my summer time “heat” in the 60’s!
I would NEVER want a house like that. I’m just too simple a person and want my family much closer to me than they would ever be in that.
HA….I was going to ask when you were going to have all of your blog followers over for a farm retreat….lol…I wouldn’t just worry about the heating and cooling bills….WHO WOULD HAVE TIME TO CLEAN SOMEPLACE LIKE THAT!!!!! I have a hard enough time with my little farm house…:-)
That isn’t a McMansion, it’s a monstrosity. I thought there were covenants about building on the gorge–that the building couldn’t be visible thereby destroying the view.
Rita, it depends on who you know, if you get a house or not. But things never change, all the church camps out here (that aren’t taxed, grrr) are old estates from the teen’s when the Scenic Highway was built. Rich families from Portland like Meier’s from Meier and Frank etc. had summer homes here. The big house behind the one I took a picture of is visible from 181st on the freeway. It is so big, it is unbelievable. I wrote a grazing plan for the property that is going through the gorge commission now. I have no idea if they will pass it or not. Interesting places for sure. But not for me!
