I sure agree, it is gone all too, soon! That is one thing nice about pictures that we take. We can always get them out and think of those times!

Oh wow…what beautiful pictures!!! What are your seedlings? Do you still have a green house you plant those in for the winter?

    • August 19, 2009 5:25 am

Kristen, No greenhouse, these are going in the greenhouse with no cover, but still has its sides. Spinach, Bok Choy and some hardy lettuces and greens should be OK. And I already planted most of my winter stuff in July, these flats are just an experiment to see how far/late I can try to plant. The light is the big factor here, we get so much rain and that means clouds. When Portland went a month without rain we still had rain – so we’ll see if these get big enough to amount to anything.

wonderful pictures. i wish we had swallows here in the city, but most of the birds are starlings and other little brown jobbies.

I’m going to miss summer also.

Everything is early here. We just did pinto beans and the yield is down. Ours came out okay, but still light.

Everyone is saying their yield is down….too cool of weather.

I saw http://kyweathercenter.com/2009/07/31/record-cold-july-in-the-books.aspx?ref=rss on a couple of websites saying that we are headed into a long cold winter. Bummer http://astrophysics.suite101.com/article.cfm/where_have_all_the_sunspots_gone

We are also several weeks early on the beans. Guess we will just have to wait and see.

Gorgeous photos! I love the close ups, especially that flower shot, and of course the sunsets are stunning. The little starts look like they are happy in the shade. What is your plan for the, um, “modified” greenhouses for the winter? I hope that you’ll be able to utilize at least sections of them. So, do you notice the birds starting to flock together more? I’m not ready to say goodbye to summer at all. I’m the type that really likes to have sun on my face. That is one thing I miss about the Midwest. Even if there was 6 ft. of snow on the ground and the mercury never rose above 0, the sun still shone brightly. My daughter surprised me the other day when she told me that she likes our cloudy days. Uh, who are you and what have you done with my daughter? :-) Guess she’s a true Oregonian!

    Best. Photo. Essay. Ever.

If you were to get into calendars I’m sure we would all buy them…

*sigh!* What lovely pictures. I really enjoyed the swallow pics. I don’t recall seeing them here on my property, do we get them here(?), maybe I need to pay attention to the birdies better. Your chunky applesauce looks yummy. Can’t wait to get started on my goal of 100 quarts of applesauce soon!

Wonderful pics. I agree, this is a photo essay to cherish. I was thinking just along these lines yesterday, that this is the time to commit the summer with all its sights, smells, and tastes to memory so that they can be slowly pulled out and used to sustain a person through the cold winter. Having this array on your blog I’m sure will go far for you on that, and for all of us too, getting to have a glimpse into your summer.

Beautiful pics! My ten year old daughter, Zoie, is a lay ornithologist, I’ll have to show her those swallow pics! I never thought about chunky applesauce, got a recipe? Or is it basically just don’t puree the apples, LOL! I’m going applepicking today with the kiddos.

    Yes, completely gorgeous as always!

the chunky applesauce looks so yummy! I need to try that this year!

    sighs….
    husbands Gram made chunky applesauce.

(One day when she was 92 and canning nectarines, Pops (93) had to go to the dentist. He kissed her on the cheek and said, “Mammy, don’t touch the rest of those until I get back. He died in the dentist chair. She never canned again.)
