Old, cold and new
October 18, 2010
I guess Hotel Trapper Creek isn’t so bad after all…Hank is still here, hunting up a storm and being his Hank self. He knows we will take what we can get.
I guess winter is on the way…
Announcing – Willy! Our newest addition to the barnyard. It’s been a tough year, putting down animals, first Della, and then Nick my daughters old mount. Replacements make the days go a little easier and the keep the memories a little sweeter.

Oooh, Willie looks like such a handsome fellow. Very kind eye. Your kidlet is a lucky girl!
As for Mr. Hank the Hunter, could you please have him email my girls and give them a few tips on hunting? Thusfar they have not caught on to The Plan, where they catch and kill rodents but leave the chickens alone. Hrmph.
We too have had our sad times this year, putting down our Jersey cow, Bessie, in early Spring and then the sudden illness of our beloved Fjord gelding, Mo and having to make the loving choice to have him put down as well. We’re still grieving his loss, but are all beginning to feel like maybe there is room for another horse in our hearts, so maybe bySpring the stall will have another renter*wink*
The only problem we have is that my Mom( who has alzheimers) is very controlling when it comes to horses and can make life fairly miserable if things are not done HER way*sigh* This is in part why we’re waiting until Spring.
Glad Hank is stying around, and being a good hunter is an added plus
)
We too woke to a heavy freeze this morning, lathought the evening before felt colder to me. We lit our first fire in the wood cookstove night before last, but yesterday it was warm enough that the house stayed at 68F, so no fire needed.
We’re still working on tomatoes( we’ve had a beautiful crop from the greenhouse!) and hope to get to the last two heads of cabbage to be cut and made into kraut. Of course there is laundry, cleaning the house a bit after the weekend, cleaning up after butchering turkeys( our outside kitchen area) and making stew for supper*wink*
Blessing for your week,
Kelle
I’m glad Hanks’s still hangin’ around…..I thought of him often this past week. We had a Sneed that did the same thing and when he came back he retired here. I’m sorry for Ruthless’s loss but I’m happy she has a new “man” in her life. If I’d have know I could have sent our “Fat Willy” down…..they’d have been a good fit too.
Willie sure does look like a handsome fellow!
Willy is beautiful! He has kind looking eyes, but looks a little camara shy. I am sure he will get over that soon. Tell Ruthless that I am so happy for her.
I am glad that Hank is wintering with you. Hope the gang gets along with him.
Have a great week.
Pam
What a sweet face Willy has! Travis has that same kind, yet worried, eye. Wish I could kiss him on the nose. Happy fall!
Willie is gorgeous!
If Willy is as sweet as his eyes say he is, I’d even ride him. He has a very sweet face.
It’s good to hear that Hank is still around. I’ll bet someone else is now wondering where he is, the scoundrel
what a sweet, intelligent face Willy has! You can just see him thinking. Looks like he’ll be a good fit in the family.
Willy is beautiful! He looks a little worried but then I suppose he’s getting used to his new surroundings. That’s amazing that your old cat came back after being gone for so long…bet he was at a neighbors like you said. We had that happen to the neighbor behind us…her cat was missing for 9 months then a lady called to say she found it. Sorry that you had to put two critters down this year..that’s always tough but like you said …the new ones make the loss easier. Enjoy your Tuesday.

Pretty horsie!
Do you think Hank can come in for the winter? He said he promises to be good and warm your feet when on cold nights…
What a beautiful horse. I so hate losing our furry friends they really are the best part of our lives…so warm and loyal and just plain wonderful. And you are right, new furry friends do help keep the memories.

Ugh, yes, putting down the lovely ones is not easy. My heart goes out to you and your daughter! On the upside it looks like you’ve found some wonderful new arrivals.
And seriously, have you ever thought of putting your photos in a contest? Or publishing them into a book on farming? I think they are breathtakingly glorious and really deserve to be enshrined somehow.
On to a totally selfish note, I could use your help wading in to yet another ‘debate’ about the human-predator conflict I’ve got going on. It is tiring being the only voice of ‘reason’! It is an amazingly naive view most folks have of where their food comes from and what it takes to get it to their table. Honestly, I’m exhausted with trying to explain the whole cycle of life and why bears cannot be tolerated in a human settlement to full bellied, grocery store, Costco revering, people who see bears through Disneyfied glasses and think the solution lies in removing the attractants.
If, and when you have time (and energy), you can put your two-cents in, I’d be very appreciative!
Kind regards as always,
Kristeva
