Still Cool

May 17, 2011

Not me, the weather.  I get jealous when I see photos of lilacs in bloom.

After having temps in the 80′s last week…we are barely above 50 this week. Really strange weather….and cccccold.

Yes, it’s cool and rainy here in upstate NY, too. I worry that the bees won’t get out to pollinate all the blossoms that have popped up. I am still waiting for a “normal” year and hope that this weird weather is not the new normal. Greenhouses are going to be a necessity for even a backyard gardner.

I hear ya loud and clear. The lilacs at our old house are in full bloom. At our new place, at a 500′ higher elevation, they are just barely opening up. Ah well. When those in the valley are burnt to a crisp, we’ll still have fresh blooms. :)

We do have the lilacs … southern end of the big valley hath its advantages … but, yes, we could use a little warmth here too.

    No worries, you’re cool, too ; ))

My lilacs (in SE Minnesota) are at the same stage as yours right now. We have had frost warnings the past two nights!

At least you don’t have SNOW in your forecast :) ) Hopefully it will stay in the mountains (up to 2 ft.) and we’ll just get much needed rain. Still chilly here also – no lilac flowers but big fat buds – and the first mess of asparagus for dinner tonight – yea! Side note question – do you take away the feed at night from your Cornish x chicks? I don’t but have seen it recommended.

Marcia, eek! It’s snowing here in the mountains and it can just stay up there and far as I am concerned :)

I don’t take away the food, but when the lights go out, they go to bed so they can’t eat until daylight. I do take it away when I move the pen so they eat grass first while it is still fresh. But they are still inside at this point, my daughter wants to rejuvenate her steed’s summer paddock so the chickens get to fertilize that this go ’round, and the horse and Jane are mowing it down in preparation for the chicks.

We are still cool and wet on the coast, but today was an unexpected sunny warm interlude. – Margy

You’re in good company! If the sun would shine it would be a memorable experience. I wonder if we’ll have 1 tomato or 1 pepper this year….maybe lots of peas and lettuce!
