Summer Begins

Heavy rain is common here in June… this was Monday’s scene.  Great grass growing weather, terrible gardening weather.

The first summer squash!  Thanks hoophouse!

My buddy!

Shameless snake doctor – he posed two days in a row on the back fence.

Cuteness!

Quality control inspector.

More cuteness.  We went with a movie theme this year, meet Gale, Peta and Katniss.

Oh my goodness, cuteness indeed – those kittens are simply gorgeous – classic mousers by the look of them. Didn’t know those were called “snake doctors” – learned another thing today!

SSF, those kittens are hilarious! The dogs give them all a wide berth, a few scratched Aussie noses and the mama cat had those dogs whipped!

Is that zucchini? Do you typically harvest them that big?

    • June 20, 2012 10:17 am

Joshua, usually bigger! Bit I didn’t want to wait – I like this size for canning too. I succession plant and harvest the last ones of fall quite large, and they keep well into December and sometimes into January if we don’t eat them first.

Interesting. I usually try to pick them smaller, as they get really seedy once they grow large. But I guess the flesh isn’t any worse, and you do get a lot more of it.

Joshua, it may be the angle of the photo, it’s only about 10″ long and the seeds were very tiny. Although I know they are sold much, much smaller.

    I remember rain. Sigh.

    • June 20, 2012 10:25 am

HFS, yeah me too, like it was yesterday, oh wait, it was yesterday. Sunny today though and tomorrow, then rain again. We’ve had 7″ since the first of June. Sure is good for the pasture though :D

      • June 20, 2012 11:22 am

That was just mean. I’ve probably put down 7″ of sweat since the first of June…lol

        • June 20, 2012 11:43 am

HFS, I don’t even want to tell you how lowwww our humidity gets here in the summer once the rain ceases…

        • June 20, 2012 11:54 am

Well, you got me there. We have high humidity to match our high temperature.

Someone dropped off some long, starchy zucchini last night. The pigs thought I was the best.

Cute Kitties…I am detecting the same theme all over.. a friend just adopted a kittie and she came with the name “Prim.” Close to 100* here is sunny central VA….would love some rain.

    • June 20, 2012 11:44 am

Lyelle, we couldn’t resist with 3 of them – it took us a long time to find this batch. Wily momma :)

I’m a true Oregonian, if it doesn’t rain for a spell I get kinda nervous ;)

Great pics. I usually pressure can a mixture of celery, onions, tomatoes and zuchinni in quarts. Great to add to stew, etc. How do you can your zuchinni?

    • June 20, 2012 3:09 pm

Bev, thanks! Yum! I can the zucchini, sliced in uniform sizes at 10 pounds pressure for 30 minutes. Great for casseroles or adding to lasagna sauce etc., they’re so good though, we eat a lot of summer squash in the summer too!

Alas, I have a 30×85′ semi-gable greenhouse and was really inspired by you to get more food and less ornamental stuff going in there. Then it rained, the day job ramped up, lambs were born, calves were born, kids (adult human variety) needed help, grand darling came to stay a few days, and there is no food planted inside yet. Outside garden is coming along, but the only harvestable food so far is spinach and kale. Next year I vow to be more like you!

My husband is going to build me a small green house and I cannot wait! That will make my seed starting so much easier next Spring, and I hope to grow a few leafy veggies in it this winter.

Oh, those kittens are just adorable.

    • June 21, 2012 8:07 am

      Kay, congrats!

Oh my goodness those kittens are crazy funny, especially when they see the cow! They know they’ll get some milk pretty quick!

That’s the way it should be :) Our barn cat does not like milk at all. She is a bit strange IMO LOL

Always amazing the difference 30 miles makes! We got barely a misting on monday, I was actually hoping for some substantial rain before the heat started.

    • June 24, 2012 7:53 am

Ben, I know what you mean, I had a 4-H friend who lived in HR and the difference was shocking in such a short distance. Pretty powerful mountain range we have here! We got another 1 1/2 yesterday!

Well Gale and Katniss will be great hunters! Good luck with Peeta. We had kale and spinach tonight, the first food from the garden sauteed with garlic and balsamic vinegar like you suggested, it was excellent!

    • June 24, 2012 8:00 am

April, next year you’ll have your own garlic too! Peeta may not live up to his name, he’s getting pretty agressive ;)
