A peck?

Fiery Sunrise

The crows are back, the swallows are gone, and the deer are scavenging for windfalls, all signals fall is here for good.  Fall is a bittersweet time, harvest baskets are brimming, but the days are short.  The pink sky this morning was ominous, and the smoke in the air is casting a pall over my day.

Too early! Wasn’t it just 100 degrees about 2 weeks ago? I had to scrape ice off of my windshield this morning! Just a couple more weeks…just a few dozen more tomatoes! That’s all I ask. Nature burned me out all summer and we’re already being frozen out the 3rd day of fall. Not fair. Just a few more weeks. We’re supposed to be frost-free till Oct. 15th. Come on. I’m on-board with the bitter, not so much the sweet.

Barn Swallows left some time ago. Dragonflies too. Geese are grouping up. Fall garden looks good. Greenhouse is 25% planted. Send compost.

HFS, I know! I should be hauling in more wood…gloves and down vests for the morning chill. I’m trying to stave off fall by leaving all the canning and milk jars on the cookstove (read extra counter space during summer) but I’m starting to realize that I am putting empty jars away to wait for the next season, and soon an extra layer won’t cut it :(

Yeah, it’s real smoky right now, we’re not getting any east wind but I bet it’s blowing down in the gorge :(

Yeah, yeah, no wind up your way :) Plenty down here the other day, drying out all of the plants and prompting the cows and horses to drain the water troughs. Feels nice to do chores in the cool air in the morning before it gets hot though!

Hmmm, it’s pretty cool in the morning when I milk…although now I have to turn on the light! Smoky right now!
