Additions to previous family cow post

March 9, 2008

These are the items I forgot on the expense side.

300# COB grain        $72.00    approximately 1# per day during lactation

Fresh-n-Easy               29.00   mineral supplement to avoid milk fever

No-Fly                           45.00  wipe on fly repellent

I purchase the second and third items from Crystal Creek, a natural vet supply company in Wisconsin.  I used maybe a 1/3 of the fly repellent and 1/2 of the Fresh-n-Easy.   So add another $101.50 to the expense side.  However these last items are not necessary.  One thing I keep on hand from Crystal Creek is their Saf-Cal non caustic drench,  just in case of milk fever.  I believe this is the only non caustic drench that is available.  I also bought a drenching gun from them that is a dream to use.  You don’t drown the cow, get it all over you, and it is easier to use the the caulking gun style.  I haven’t actually had to use it, but I learned to use one cow-side at a seminar.
The other tool we have on hand is a homeopathy farm kit.  I purchased this from Clark Veterinary Clinic, located in Pennsylvania.  717-838-9563.  This is a 40 remedy kit for lactating and non-lactating food producing animals.  It contains the most common remedies in potency’s useful on a livestock farm, and a laminated waterproof Materia Medica.  We use this for all our animals and ourselves.  The cost 5 years ago was $200.00, including a phone consultation of 15 -30 minutes.  Replacement remedies can be ordered from Washington Homeopathy Products.  While none of these things are necessary, they sure make life simpler.

Just had to throw in pictures of our baby dog.

Look what 6 months of clean farm living can do for a guy!  He’s almost grown into that tongue.

Don’t often have time to comment, but just wanted to let you know I love your blog. It’s filled with such helpful information. I appreciate the time you take to share. Just wish you lived next door so I could run over with all my questions. 🙂
