I’m posting about raising meat chickens at Simple-Green-Frugal Co-op today.  Hope to get to answering my comments soon…

Great article, once again. I’m hoping to do something similar here in suburban Australia sometime this year.

Thnks for posting this, I am looking at getting some meat birds and layers in the spring and this was really informative. Excellent article.

I would love to raise my own meat chicken, but I think I would have a problem in the killng/cleaning them department. I guess I will have to just continue buying my chicken at the market.

Hi, I read your post from a couple of hours ago, but I came back to leave a comment… and it was gone.
Please tell me that is because you realised that you want to keep going. I love this blog. When i first found it I went right back to the beginning to read all the posts. You have a natural and frank writing style. Your lifestyle seems very unique to me and i love reading about farming in such a different climate to mine. Plus i absolutely love the photos of your cattle 🙂
One day (soon I hope) i want to purchase a block of land, I want my grandchild and great grandchild to be able to live in a house built by her family and work land full of her families history.
    Thank you for sharing

Green change, thanks. I hope the chicken project works out for you.

Janelle, thanks, I can’t wait for spring.

Claudia, check around, there might be a small state licensed abattoir that will do them for you, and you could still do the at the raising of them. Or check at a feedstore, there sometimes are groups who have the equipment and get together and do the deed.

Kella B, thank you for the confirmation that I’m not too boring. I had set the goal of completing one year, and I didn’t know really if I should continue or not.

    I LOVE your plan!

    Great article and great pictures!
We did raise meat chickens. However, it was somewhat traumatic. Compared to our show birds, they had no personality, didn’t want to roam, had no interest in life. The meat was tasty and much fattier than from a grocery store. Both Farmer Boy and I didn’t like how brain dead they were. But maybe that’s how you want your meat stock, so you don’t form any attachments. We haven’t done it for some time. Right now we are thinking of raising turkeys.
