Buttons, oh my gosh, I don’t dare holler for the dogs without getting an answer from the cows, they are usually pretty happy to see me. I like them that way. 🙂
I always loved that I could call my Jersey cow, Bessie and she come from wherever she was, no matter what. Our Dexter heifer isn’t at that point yet, but we’re working on it! The Angus steer, well we’ve handled him since he was 2 weeks old, bottle feeding him still and he still is so skitish. The only thing I can come up with is that it must be the breed.
Kelle, I don’t have any experience with Dexters, but you can keep Angus, they seem much more skittish than Herefords. Of course, it depends on who you ask. 🙂 Everyone has their favorites. I am really liking Jane’s personality as it emerges, she is very calm, and pliable – so far anyway.
Jen, she was grabbing the strap, and then just started sniffing me. Cows have a very strong sense of smell, so I probably smelled like a hay bale from feeding the other cows, and I had just washed up a bunch of carrots for her bucket – she could tell. Goofy girl.
You’re right about breed personality depending on who you ask 🙂 We have two Jersey/Angus cross calves, one is as sweet and docile as you can please, while the other, smaller calf is dominant and high-strung, hardly wants me to touch her… both well handled and loved. I’m totally convinced that within a breed you will have both ends of the spectrum.
That said, what a gorgeous Guernsey! I love the end-of-winter fluff 🙂
What a lovely heifer she is! I love that name – Jane Butterfield! My heifer, Jasmine, knows her name and knows I will give her scritches when she sees me. Due to freshen in a week!!!

I love the way that she trotted right up to you!
Paula, it helps to smell like carrots! But she is very friendly, and really keeps her eye on us no matter how far away she happens to be.
Matron I can totally relate to this video. I have cows that are very friendly. I love my cows. B

Awwwww…it shows what a wonderful job you are doing! She is a lucky, lucky cow. Not to mention where you are you have the start of GRASS!
Jani, yes you can smell the grass and the soil – it is starting to warm a bit! I consider myself lucky too, to have Jane – she is a sweetie.

That is just the neatest thing! Have a great weekend! 🙂
Linda, thanks 🙂
I am surprised your camera came away unscathed. I kept waiting for the image to be marred by a wet nose print on the camera lens! What a cutie!

Thanks for sharing! She’s not only cute and friendly, she’s really clean. What a sweetie!!!

such a sweetie! (almost) makes me want a cow! Actually, I do WANT a cow. I just don’t want to take care of a cow. So – no cows for me!
