Sauerkraut is good, but I like this fresh salad during the summer. Read over at Simple-Green-Frugal Co-op for the recipe.

This recipe looks great and….Simple! 🙂 I’ll have to try it! A potatoe question….When should I stop watering my potatoes…they are in a whiskey barrel and most seem to be mature…should I dig them all out or can Ieave them in the dirt and dig them all out. Do they continue to grow thoughout the fall months? Can you tell I’m a first time potatoe grower?? 🙂
Thanks!
Chris, ideally you want to stop watering them so the vines can die back and the skins can toughen up for storage. If you’re not storing them, you can harvest them anytime. As for watering I don’t water mine, but they are grown dryland style so a container would be a different matter. 🙂
Sounds great, will have to try that one. We picked our first two cabbages on Saturday. We did sell them at the farmers market yesterday, but there are more out there:)
Karen, I know ours are just starting to come on. Delicious!
Kind of chuckled. A young woman that bought the seven pounder, with a few extra leaves still attached to the head, said, with a touch of amazement in her voice… ‘so that’s what they look like before you buy them in the store’:)
Karen, I know, our neighbor bought some cabbage starts from us and in a few months she called to see if the cabbage grew underground like a beet because the cabbage hadn’t started forming a head yet.
GORGEOUS cabbage!
🙂
Thanks for the tater info…I’ll stop watering them. Dryland style means you don’t water them at all? I thought taters needed lots of water or at least consistent watering. It is amazing how many I got growing them in the barrel!
You mean I can just leave them in the barrel and dig them as I need them or do they need to come out of the dirt and be stored?
I love slaw. This one sounds great and so simple to make. I have some cabbage (unfortunately from the store not my garden) and will give it a try. – Margy
My question is, how do you get such beautiful cabbage? I always have problems with worms eating huge holes in the leaves!
we have slug issues here. My cabbages are looking very holey….
