We only got a small winter supply of berries this year, so I’m not going to be thinking about your beautiful pictures, or how those berries would go with cream and a bit of sugar, or anything else like that, because otherwise the whole stock will be gone by the end of this month 🙂 Instead, I’m going to savor my cup of peppermint and chaga tea and keep thinking we’ve got enough to last all winter 🙂
A.A. oh dear, berries grow like rabbits here, and some are downright invasive, growing up into trees and covering anything in their path. But they are pretty tasty and not hard to find. If only the garden would be so lush!
Envious of all the bounty… well, maybe except the moist cow nose. 😉

I love your blog! I have been reading for about a month now and have tried to work my way through most of your family cow section. Great information! We bought a Guernsey milk cow a couple months ago and she calved on Fri. A beautiful heifer who could be Jane’s twin. I am just learning about the grass, minerals etc etc. The learning curve is steep and just got steeper. The calf has a respiratory infection and I don’t have anything natural to treat her with except fastrack and dynamin. She is on antibiotics ( I know I know!) but I don’t want to lose her. Do you have any suggestions for me? I found Paul Dettlof’s site where I can order some homeopathic things and tinctures but I don’t know what I need for her. Plus it will be a week before I can get anything. I use Herbs for Kids for my children so have learned to stock up so I have what I need when I need itl. Thanks for any help!
They finally ripened? My mom is up by Seattle and she was complaining how the berry harvest was really, really late this year.
It’s late and now the rain is ruining what did get ripe 😦

Despite being the latest year ever for blackberries this year, it has probably been the best here (SW B.C.). Between us we have picked 59 4 litre (1 gallon) ice cream pails full. Some of the clumps that I usually pick, this year I didn’t even get to, as there were so many elsewhere.
How do the yellow raspberries taste? We have some red ones ripe right now, but I don’t find them to have much taste. The rain probably isn’t helping, but they weren’t any better last year either.
Karen, we didn’t do that good, but not for lack of berries just no time to pick. It was a great year as far as yield though. We spend so much time fighting the darn things, it is really hard to make ourselves go pick much more than about 5 gallons worth. We’re still picking blueberries!
The yellow raspberries are sweeter than the red. But they sure are prolific and hardy. I only have one clump left, I took out an entire row since they are so hard to get much of a harvest from due to the usual rain in the fall, but they just keep coming back. Tough to kill out which can be a good thing. All in all, I like the regular old raspberries better for flavor and texture.
Beautiful harvest. Mmm….. I sure do miss my Pacific NW blackberries.

lovely photos.. it’s nice that you can grow your own berries.. here in my country, berries are kinda expensive, strawberries are grown in high and cold altitude and i don’t think we have raspberries here.. really envious with all that bounty..

i love strawberries and you would not believe it? I tasted one of the sweetest strawberries in Indonesia in a town called Bandung. I guess the volcanic soil must have contained the right nutrients. The strawberries were so sweet as if you have dipped it into sugar syrup. (Btw its only the strawberries near the volcano that were sweet – not the who;e of the town)

Ooo so beautiful! I used to grow my own strawberries, but my Yorkie would take a bite out of each one so no one could really appreciate them.

I was looking at the photo on freshly pressed thinking “what the heck is that?” , I hated to think! But as I have just viewed it here on your blog I can see it’s of one of my most favourite animals-the Cow…I think they can be so friendly and gentle. A great !
