Around the Farm

Can Spring be here?  Three or four dry days in a row.  We’re in high gear now.  I always know spring has really sprung when the salad spinner comes out and takes a permanent place on the wood cookstove.  Hidden meaning, salad spinner on wood stove means no fire, and salad every day = warmth.  I welcome the seasonal changes.  Cows out, less barn chores, more fence chores, mild mustard greens, the smell of tomato and marigold plants when you bump them, freshly turned soil, thick green grass, frogs, fair weather birds… .  Soon babies, kitties, calves, and chicks.  Sick of rutabagas, squash and cabbage and relishing succulent lettuce.

Beautiful! We so rarely see the sheep.

Rita, us either! Usually they are delegated to mowing around the greenhouses/gardens etc., and I decided to bring them to the house and let (make)them mow thelawn. They did not like all the action at first, preferring the quiet of the flat by the canyon. Now they are used to it. Adding to that, the oldest one (Friendly) died a couple of weeks ago, and she was the boss of her daughter and niece so they were a little out sorts. 😦

I LOVED the spiderweb picture!! I had a cow napping so deeply, out flat, that I thought she was dead. Heart stopping moment. And the laughing cow was just wonderful, made me smile. :))

I had not thought of the salad spinner in that way, but ours has also been out nearly every day. And our chicks, 50 of them, arrive on April 30, next Monday. I just adore the scent of marigolds…
