Utterly beautiful. What is the red stuff in the last two shots?
Gunta, thanks. Both ornamental Amaranth, the long trailing is Love Lies Bleeding Ponytails, and I forget the name of the upright, both are volunteers now, and just come up. I thin them out and leave the ones that aren’t in the way of vegetable rows. Volunteers like this are pretty good indicators of soil temp for me, if they sprout I know it is warm enough for some of the more tender crops. A lot of the sunflowers are volunteers too, I leave heads for the birds to feed and the stalks for the spiders and I always get some new plants scattered around.

Ugh. Short days are killing us. I’ll be grinding hog feed in the dark tonight.
I couldn’t bear to plow down the volunteer sunflowers back in spring, and planted my garden around them. It’s not like we were lacking for space! The “volunteer army” turned out to be a jungle of the multi-flowered, small,rust-colored ornamental sunflowers and it attracted an entire flock of goldfinches. I know I’ll be sorry next year because the volunteer rate will likely multiply like crazy, but the feast for the eyes and heart in the garden this summer has been just as filling as the feast for the belly.

This year’s weather has been so interesting! My sunflowers rose to 8′ so fast and were already dead almost a month ago with volunteers coming up NOW in September rather than waiting til next year! Gorgeous amaranth by the way – a friend of mine grows it here in his urban backyard – so lovely!

Amy, wow that’s digging in the old memory bank, probably Johnny’s I think. The Pony Tails selection had more accentuated balls along the bloom instead of just the rope, but all of them are pretty. Probably someone like Thompson & Morgan might have the Pony Tails.
Nature has such a way with color! I love it!

So beautiful! Over here leaves are falling fast and the first fall storm’s arrived. It’s overcast and windy and sometimes gives a few drops of rain. Good to be indoors 🙂 It’s been dry enough to leave the animals outside, only supplement the pasture with enough feed to keep them warm. I’ll bring them in this coming weekend and then take back out if a dry and calm fall weather sets in.
AA, sounds cold to me! It’s wet here now for good, I fear. No leaf drop to speak of yet, but I closed some windows and threw on another quilt last night.
Wow! Look at them honey bees! You should bees too one of these days : ).
