Garden Notes – March 8th, 2015

I hope you’re not getting bored with my Sunday/Monday garden note posts.  In an effort to combine some tasks, namely blogging and keeping my garden records up-to-date, it makes sense to combine the two.

Despite our wonderful winter that never was, I’m still a little on the fence about committing to much outside gardening.  I’ve done some preliminary ground work, but I’m willing to bide my time and proceed with the original plan which is using the greenhouse space as my first garden of the season.  It’s still frosty in the mornings, and the greenhouse is just warm enough to let me get going on some early crops.  The soil is perfect.

The first round of direct seeding went in today.  Sugar Snap peas, Nelson carrot, Touchstone Gold & Detroit Dark Red beets, Dark Red Norland potatoes, cilantro, and buckwheat cover crop in the half of the greenhouse I am reserving for fall crops.

We seeded our first transplants February 15th, and today the Joi Choi bok choy, Basic arugula, and Space spinach were ready to be planted out.

I can’t describe how good it feels to have my hands in the warm soil on a regular basis.  Lovely.

Boy that dirt looks lovely! I took a soil thermometer out to the cold frames. To my surprise, the ground in there is still frozen solid… guess it’ll be awhile. Meanwhile, I will enjoy your garden!

My first starts of the year are up–tiny little onions, still all stooping over in the flat and fixing to reach for the lights. Your photo cheers me as I ponder the foot of hard packed snow in the back yard.

    Not the least bit bored.

Not bored here and our snow is gone!!!!! Yeah! I think we will commit to some outside gardening soon, as our snow came before the ground froze and so not too bad this year and the breeze drying things out nicely. So looks like we might only be a couple of weeks behind you, after all. It is nice to see where we might be soon

I for one (here in the frozen Northeast) love reading your reports. Please don’t stop them!! I get to live vicariously, as chances of me ever having a greenhouse are slim.

You’re ahead of me now, which is strange lol. My soil is still a mud slick because of all the snow melt!

I can’t get carrots to come up. Even with all this moisture. Maybe I should start over, but after that, if there’s still nothing, I give up!

Blogging and keeping one’s garden records up-to-date-it is very hard.
